The Wyoming Cowboys will kick off their season on the road against the New Mexico State Aggies in an inter-conference battle Saturday night from the Aggie Memorial Stadium. The Cowboys went 8-5 with an 5-3 mark in conference play last season, followed by a 37-14 victory against Central Michigan in the Potato Bowl. The Aggies went 7-6 last season which included a win against Utah State in the Arizona Bowl.
WYOMING Opened at -5 with the Total 48.5 over New Mexico St
CURRENT ODDS: Wyoming -4 @ New Mexico St +4 TOTAL 45
The Other Game Saturday Night is Hawaii @ Colorado St -14 / 56.6
The Wyoming Cowboys head into the season with a different look after star quarterback Josh Allen was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft. Redshirt freshman Tyler Vander Waal is battling with senior Nick Smith for the new starting role. Cowboys head coach Craig Bohl has recently stated that Vander Waal has the upper hand over Smith. The Wyoming running game will be reliant on Kellen Overstreet to carry the load. The junior running back collected 481 rushing yards on 109 carries last season in split duties with Trey Woods who is transitioning to defensive end this season. The Cowboys do return a majority of their receiving core including Austin Conway who accumulated a team-leading 549 receiving yards last season. The Cowboys offensive line is already dealing with a couple of injuries this season after an injury-plagued 2017 season. Wyoming only averaged 23.5 points even with Josh Allen in the fold last season, and scoring points will not be the Cowboys strength this season.
The Wyoming defense was among the best in the MWC last season and it will again be a strength. Eight starters return including linebacker Logan Wilson who made 111 tackles last season. Safety Andrew Wingard also returns after amassing a team-leading 114 tackles and five interceptions last season. The Cowboys held opponents to an average of 17.5 points per game last season, good for ninth in the entire country.
The New Mexico State Aggies are now an Independent after departing the Sun Belt conference. The Aggies will have a new quarterback at the helm in place of the talented Jake Rogers. The battle has been narrowed down to senior Nick Jeanty and junior college transfer Matthew Romero. Jeanty tallied 389 passing yards with a 1:4 TD to INT ratio in limited action last season. Although the Aggies running game did lose their 2017 leading rusher Larry Rose III, junior back Jason Huntley is poised for a big season after registering 420 rushing yards and 363 receiving yards last season. The Aggies also lost 2017 receiving leader Jaleel Scott, however they do return most of their receiving core including OJ Clark who brought in 500 receiving yards last season. The Aggies will have a difficult time replicating last year’s offense that ranked sixth in the nation in passing yards.
The Aggies defense displayed progress last season and they should continue to improve this season with seven starters returning. Linebacker Terrill Hanks is back after finishing second with 106 tackles last season, and he also recorded seven sacks. Last season’s sack leader Cedric Willcots II is also returns after leading the Aggies with 8.5 sacks last season. New Mexico State’s defense should improve after ranking 86th in the country with an average of 29.7 points against in 2017.
