Notes   With the Detroit Lions the last NFL team to break through with a victory, there doesn’t appear to be too many teams that are packing it in down the stretch. After all, the Lions have covered four in a row on a 6-3 spread run. Sure, they’ve been undervalued, but they’ve also played hard, squeezing out a 16-16 tie at Pittsburgh, losing 13-10 at the Browns as a +13 dog, and to Chicago, Baltimore, and Minnesota by 2 points each time. As bad as the Lions have been, with a few breaks in those close games they aren’t that far from having a semi-respectable season.

But it’s also the time of the year when players can think about things other than playing hard each week: their health, their contract status, individual stats. That “me” approach makes it harder to win at this level riding out a long-lost season. There are plenty of times when teams pack it in and it can show up against the spread. A year ago in December, the Jacksonville Jaguars wrapped up a lost season by losing their final four games by 21, 26, 24, and 14 points. It can show in totals, as well. The 2020 Detroit Lions had a decent offense behind QB Matt Stafford, but the atrocious defense packed it in going 6-0 OVER the total to end the lost campaign, surrendering 41, 30, 31, 46, 47, and 37 points. Both organizations then went through a front office house cleaning.

A house cleaning may be on tap for the Giants, Jets, Bears, and Texans, four teams to watch carefully over the next few weeks when it comes to effort…or lack of effort. Before the season began, Giants’ owner John Mara stated plainly “everyone is on the hot seat.” Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has already been axed after a 30-10 loss to Tampa Bay. They’ve then scored 13 and 9 points, part of a 6-1-1 run UNDER the total. GM Dave Gettleman and coach Joe Judge are still on the job and the hot seat.

In the first five games of the new season, the Jets were competitive under first-year coach Robert Saleh, beating the Titans (27-20) as a +5.5 dog, while losing close ones at Carolina (19-14) and at Atlanta (27-20). But New England ripped them 54-13 and the Jets have spiraled to a 2-7 SU/ATS skid. The defense has fallen apart riding a 7-3 run OVER the total.

Chicago was off an 8-8 2020 season and expected to be decent with a talented defense while coach Matt Nagy brought along a young offense. After a 3-2 SU/ATS start the roof fell in during a 1-6 SU/ATS slide. The offense has been awful, #29 in yards, points, and on third down, last in passing. The lone victory was over the Detroit Lions, 16-14 – not exactly a win to pop champagne bottles over. With two games against the Vikings and one at Seattle, it should wind up the disappointing train wreck.

Houston has been as bad as advertised with the only drama being will they hit their projected win total of 4, which was the lowest of any 2021 NFL futures’ bet. The late-season kick in the stomach has been the wrist injury to QB Tyrod Taylor, meaning more time for backup David Mills. The Texans are on a 1-11 SU, 3-9 ATS run. Coach David Culley has been dealing with discipline issues, suspending players, so it can’t be a happy locker room. After opening the year with a 37-21 win at Jacksonville, Houston’s offense is averaging 11.8 points (8-3 run UNDER the total). For perspective, the 2009 Rams went 1-15 averaging 10.9 points and the 2010 Panthers went 2-14 averaging 12.3 points. Both are on the Top 30 list of the most inept offenses in NFL history.

College Basketball Betting Notes: Does anyone remember Iowa State was 2-22 last season? That includes 0-18 in Big 10 play. Unbeaten Iowa State has covered six of eight after destroying state rival Iowa, 73-53.

Memphis has had two No. 1 recruiting classes by Penny Hardaway, in 2019 and 2021. They won the 2021 NIT as the No. 1 seed so expectations have been high, but Memphis is on a 0-4 SU/ATS run.
