Weekly college football top 25 rankings are a big part of every season, and we will update the top 25 following the games each weekend. The fourth weekend of the 2021 season was headlined by Arkansas beating Texas A&M in Arlington, NC State’s upset of Clemson, Oklahoma’s close call against West Virginia and Notre Dame’s blowout win over Wisconsin. Maryland jumps into the picture – and an upset win over IOWA next week, the TERPS will move up bigtime.
1. Alabama (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Southern Miss
Crimson Tide ace non-conference tune-up against Southern Miss to set up huge two-game stretch against Ole Miss and Texas A&M.
2. Georgia (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Vanderbilt
The Bulldogs nearly scored as many points (62) as yards allowed to Vanderbilt (77) in an easy 62-0 win on Saturday.
3. Oregon (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Arizona
The Ducks capitalized off five Arizona turnovers for 20 points, but coach Mario Cristobal’s team has plenty to work on after a so-so 41-19 win over Arizona.
4. Iowa (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Colorado State
It wasn’t pretty, but Iowa got enough timely offense to go with a defense that pitched a shutout in the second half to dispatch Colorado State’s upset bid.
5. Penn State (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Villanova
No letdown here for coach James Franklin’s squad. Quarterback Sean Clifford threw for 401 yards and four scores, and the defense didn’t allow a touchdown until the outcome wasn’t in doubt, as Penn State improved to 4-0 with a 38-17 win over Villanova.
6. Arkansas (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Texas A&M
Sam Pittman’s turnaround effort in Fayetteville continues with a huge 20-10 victory over Texas A&M. The Razorbacks recorded 443 yards, while the defense held the Aggies to just 4.6 yards a snap.
7. Oklahoma (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated West Virginia
Sooners are 4-0, but coach Lincoln Riley’s offense isn’t firing on all cylinders yet and living on the edge will catch up to this team at some point in 2021.
8. Cincinnati (3-0)
Week 4 Result: Off Week
The Bearcats were off in Week 4 and return to action next Saturday versus Notre Dame.
9. Notre Dame (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Wisconsin
The Fighting Irish were outgained 314 to 242 and ended the game with just three rushing yards, but Brian Kelly’s team converted five takeaways into 31 points in a 41-13 win over Wisconsin.
10. Florida (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Tennessee
The Gators came up short of an upset of Alabama last week, but coach Dan Mullen’s team didn’t let that disappointment spill into Week 4. Florida used 353 total yards from quarterback Emory Jones to defeat Tennessee 38-14.
11. Ohio State (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Akron
Starting quarterback C.J. Stroud was out with a shoulder injury, but the outcome of Saturday night’s matchup versus Akron was never in doubt. The Buckeyes cruised to a 59-7 win behind 622 total yards of offense.
12. Ole Miss (3-0)
Week 4 Result: Off Week
The Rebels were off in Week 4 and return to action next Saturday against Alabama.
13. Texas A&M (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Lost to Arkansas
Both sides of the ball share blame for Texas A&M’s first loss of the 2021 season. The defense allowed a couple of key big plays to Arkansas in the first half, while the offense averaged just 4.6 yards per play and converted only four of 14 third-down attempts.
14. BYU (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated USF
Starting quarterback Jaren Hall was sidelined due to injury, but the Cougars improved to 4-0 behind the steady play of backup Baylor Romney (305 yards and three scores) and running back Tyler Allgeier (81 yards and two touchdowns).
15. Coastal Carolina (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated UMass
The Chanticleers used a balanced effort on offense (246 through the air and 312 on the ground) to crush UMass 53-3.
16. Michigan (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Rutgers
Rutgers made a spirited comeback in the second half after trailing 20-3 at halftime, but Michigan’s defense forced a fumble with less than two minutes to go to secure the win.
17. Michigan State (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Nebraska
The Spartans managed only 36 yards in the second half, but a late punt return for a touchdown, along with a turnover that led to the game-winning field goal in overtime, was enough to survive Nebraska’s upset bid.
18. Fresno State (4-1)
Week 4 Result: Defeated UNLV
The Bulldogs started slow against UNLV on Friday night, but quarterback Jake Haener and the offense scored 29 points in the second half to avoid the upset.
19. UCLA (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Stanford
The ground game rebounded with 304 yards after last week’s poor performance against Fresno State, as UCLA defeated Stanford 35-24 for just the second time in 14 games.
20. NC State (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Clemson
Upset win over Clemson is NC State’s first victory over a top-10 opponent since 2012. The Wolfpack outgained the Tigers 386 to 214, forced seven three-and-outs and made the timely plays in overtime to secure the win.
21. Oklahoma State (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Kansas State
Injuries along at the offensive line and at receiver have hindered Oklahoma State’s offense this year, but as Saturday’s 31-20 win over Kansas State showed, coach Mike Gundy’s group is starting to find its form.
22. Wake Forest (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Virginia
The Demon Deacons join the top 25 after scoring on their first seven drives to earn 37-17 road win over Virginia on Friday night.
23. Baylor (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Iowa State
The Bears were outgained 479 to 282 by Iowa State, but coach Dave Aranda’s squad made the timely plays when it mattered to move to 4-0.
24. Auburn (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Georgia State
The Tigers needed late-game heroics from backup quarterback T.J. Finley to avoid an upset loss to Georgia State.
25. Clemson (2-2)
Week 4 Result: Lost to NC State
No quick fix is likely in store for Clemson’s struggling offense. Also, after losing to NC State, the Tigers also aren’t in control of the Atlantic Division anymore.
