San Jose State @
Hawaii

09-18
The Spartans were 6-0 SU and 5-0-1 vs. line in the Mountain West last year, and now 9-1-1 last 11 vs. line vs. league foes. SJSU HC Brent Brennan also 4-0 vs. line against Rainbow Warriors. UH only 4-7 vs. line last 11 in Honolulu (0-1 in new on-campus facility TY) and has dropped three straight vs. the line to open 2021.
Arizona State @
BYU

09-18
Once upon a time these were rivals in the old WAC< though have met just four times since the Sun Devils bolted in 1978 for what was previously known as the Pac-8. Those meetings came bunched in a four-year span between 1995-98, with Bruce Snyder (ASU) and LaVell Edwards (BYU) teams splitting the four clashes. Note that the Sun Devils haves covered their last 4 away from Tempe for Herm Edwards.
Iowa State @
UNLV

09-18
Interestingly, the Cyclones have covered last five and are 6-0-1 vs. line last seven after facing Iowa, which beat ISU again last week. Matching that, however, is UNLV, which has covered seven straight vs. Power 5 opposition after slipping inside of a big number at Arizona State last week, though none of those games were played in Las Vegas.
Fresno State @
UCLA

09-18
While much hype for UCLA after tis recent 2-0 break from the gate, note that the Bulldogs have covered first three this season and are now 5-0 vs. spread last five vs. Pac-12 sides (1-0 for Kalen DeBoer) after the recent near-miss at Oregon. Note that Fresno has actually beaten UCLA three in a row (2003 Silicon Valley Bowl, 2008, and 2018 during Chip Kelly’s first season in Westwood).
Oklahoma State @
Boise State

09-18
Note that Cowboys HC Mike Gundy has covered 9 of his last 13 away from Stillwater, though he’s only 2-7 vs. spread last nine since mid 2020. OSU won the last matchup between these sides by a 44-21 count at Stillwater in 2018, sacking Broncos QB Brett Rypien seven times on the afternoon.
Tulane @
Mississippi

09-18
Willie Fritz on a 19-9 spread uptick with Wave since late 2018, and has covered 5 of last 7 away from home.
Rice @
Texas

09-18
Late push by Arkansas stole cover from Owls in opener which preceded last week’s blowout loss to Houston, but Rice HC Bloomgren still 6-4 vs. spread last nine since late 2019. Also 5-3 lasts eight as dog. Horns did cover in Sark debut but prior had problems vs. line as Austin chalk (5-12 previous 17). This reprises an old SWC rivalry that disappeared when the conference disbanded following the 1995 season. Interestingly, in the previous 1994, the Owls, under Kenny Hatfield, snapped a long series losing streak with a 19-17 win in Houston, Rice’s first series win since 1965. The schools have met several times since, most recently in 2019 at NRG Stadium in Houston when the Horns rolled, 48-13, their 14th straight series win.
South Carolina @
Georgia

09-18
Curious trends in this SEC border war in whay the road team has covered the last five in this series. That included a Gamecocks stunner in 2019 at Athens when SC prevailed 20-17 in OT, perhaps the high-water of the since-concluded Will Muschamp era in Columbia. Both teams enter this clash 2-0 SU and vs. the line in the early going of 2021.
Charlotte @
Georgia State

09-18
These sides meet for the first time since Charlotte’s debut game as an FCS member when beating host Georgia State 23-20 at Atlanta in the 2015 opener. After last week’s win and cover vs. the Runnin’ Bulldogs from Gardner Webb, the 49ers are now 10-4 overall vs. the spread since late 2019 for HC Will Healy.
Auburn @
Penn State

09-18
Only the third meeting all-time between these sides whose two previous meetings came in Florida bowl games on New Year’s Day. That would include the Jan. 1, 1996 Outback Bowl in Tampa (the first time Outback affixed its name to the former Hall of Fame Bowl) when Joe Paterno’s Penn State rolled 43-14 in the rain. Seven years later on New Year’s Day 2003, Auburn would get its revenge in Orlando’s Florida Citrus Bowl with a 13-9 win for Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s Tigers. Note that since opening the truncated 2020 slate with five straight losses, James Franklin’s Nittany Lions have now won and covered six in a row after last Saturday’s romp past Ball State. Meanwhile, Auburn has started 2-0 S and vs. the line (albeit vs. lesser opposition) for new HC Bryan Harsin, who seems to have learned quickly how to keep ’em happy on the Plains.
Central Michigan @
LSU

09-18
Jim McElwain is now 16-6 vs. spread with Chips (8-5 as dog) since taking over in 2019. Meanwhile Ed Orgeron just 3-5 vs. the spread his last eight at Baton Rouge with the Tigers. Note that McElwain was 1-2 SU and 1-1-1 vs. line against LSU while at Florida.
Virginia @
North Carolina

09-18
Note that Bronco Mendenhall has won and covered as a dog each of the last two years vs. Mack Brown and Bronco’s Wahoos have won and covered 4 straight in series. Mendenhall is also 11-6 as dog with his Cavs since 2018.
Utah State @
Air Force

09-18
Note that the Falcs and HC Troy Calhoun have won this matchup big the past two years, and the Force is 5-0-1 vs. the spread the last six against the Utags.
Old Dominion @
Liberty

09-18
The Flames continue to burn brightly for Hugh Freeze, now on a 10-game cover streak after last week’s hard-fought 21-13 win at Troy.
Mississippi St @
Memphis

09-18
This is a relatively easy trip (180 miles) for the Bulldogs to the Liberty Bowl. Mike Leach teams at Washington State MSU and were on 9-18 spread skid prior to last week’s impressive 24-10 conquest of NC State. Note that the host Tigers are just 4-9 vs. the spread against FBS opposition under Ryan Silverfield, and Memphis is only 4-12 last its last 16 overall vs. the line against FBS foes dating tot he end of the Mike Norvell era.
Northwestern @
Duke

09-18
The Cats were on a 9-1 spread run and just 1 loss last 12 vs. line into 2021 before the opening loss to MSU and following up with a non-cover vs. FCS Indiana State. Still note that NU HC Pat Fitzgerald has covered 5 of his last 6 away from Evanston. Note that after last week’s win and cover vs. NC A&T, Blue Devils HC David Cutcliffe is now 13-5 vs. the line his last 18 against non-ACC opposition.
Colorado State @
Toledo

09-18
Things are not going well for 2nd-year HC Steve Addazio with his Rams, just 1-5 SU and vs. line after losing a close one to Vanderbilt last Saturday night. CSU is also 5-13 vs. points its last 18 away from Fort Collins dating to the Mike Bobo era and mid 2017.
Arkansas St @
Washington U

09-18
Butch Jones has covered both out of the 2021 box for his new employer Arkansas State, which has now covered its last five outside of the Sun Belt dating to late 2019. Note the host Huskies are just 1-5 vs. line for Jimmy Lake (whose only cover vs. wretched Arizona LY) .
Eastern Michigan @
Massachusetts

09-18
Though on the short end of a 45-28 scoreline vs. BC last week, it was a moral victory of sorts for the Minuteman, whose 16 previous losses under HC Walt Bell since 2019 had all been by 21 points or more. (Well, that’s how they measure progress on the gridiron these days in Amherst!) Note that the visiting Eagles are 25-6-1 vs. spread their last 32 away from Ypsilanti, though most of that as a dog (4-3 as visiting chalk since 2016).
Alabama @
Florida

09-18
This is a rare trip for the Tide to The Swamp, as Bama hasn’t played in Gainesville since 2011 when it blasted the Gators 38-10. Indeed, Florida’s last series win came with Tim Tebow at the controls for a 31-20 success in the 2008 SEC title game at Atlanta that set the stage for Florida to win the national title a month later vs. Oklahoma. This will be only the fourth trip in 30 years for the Crimson Tide to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Note that Gators HC Dan Mullen is 0-10 SU in his career vs. Nick Saban, but has covered in 5 of the last 8 matchups. Mullen’s last “victory” over Saban and the Tide came in that aforementioned 2008 SEC title game when Millen served as o.c. for Urban Meyer.
SMU @
Louisiana Tech

09-18
Ponies just 2-6 last 8 laying points on road. Skip Holtz was 19-8 as dog from 2014-2019 with La Tech before slipping a bit last year to 2-4 in role, but covered in that preferred role in opener vs. MSU. Most of that damage on road; just 1-3 last 4 as dog in Ruston. Note that Holtz made life miserable for SMU HC Sonny Dykes in the latter’s debut with the Mustangs, as Sonny perhaps unwisely assumed command and coached the 2017 Frisco Bowl after just being hired following the departure of Chad Morris to Arkansas. Things didn’t go well (to say the least!) for the Mustangs in a 51-10 loss to La Tech!
Georgia Tech @
Clemson

09-18
Note since General Sherman’s march has such destruction descended upon Atlanta as Dabo Swinney’s 73-7 rout of the Yellow Jackets last season. Trevor Lawrence had one of his top games of his Clemson career when he passed for 5 TDs as Clemson exploded for 35 points in the 2nd Q en route to a 52-7 halftime edge. Nothing new for Dabo to eviscerate Tech, however, after pounding the Ramblin’ Wreck 52-14 in the 2019 opener. The aggregate is getting into NASA-like calculations, but by our count that’s 125-21 in favor of the Tigers the past two years! Clemson has also won last six meetings (5-0-1 vs. line in those), while Geoff Collins just 8-15-2 vs. line with the Jackets since 2019.
Florida State @
Wake Forest

09-18
The Noles are plumbing some new depths after last week’s last-play loss to Jacksonville State, their first L vs. lower-tier opposition since 1961 when Bill Peterson’s FSU lost 12-0 to what was then called Mississippi Southern (now known as Southern Miss). That loss to the FCS Gamecocks dropped the Noles to 6-11 their last 17 as chalk since early 2018. We’ll see how this line moves at Wake Forest but also note that FSU is 1-5 vs. line last six as ACC visitor. Deacs HC Dave Clawson had covered 8 straight at home in Winston-Salem (counting the ODU opener as a W) prior to falling just short as 43-point chalk vs. lower-tier Norfolk State last week.
Kent State @
Iowa

09-18
Note that after yet another win over cross-state ISU last week, Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz is now 9-1 last 10 vs. line against non-Big Ten foes.
Tulsa @
Ohio State

09-18
After hanging tough vs. Oklahoma State last week, Golden Hurricane HC Philip Montgomery has covered all five chances as an underdog since last season, and 8 of 9 getting points in the regular season. Also 9-2 last 11 as a DD dog. Note that Ryan Day might be losing some of his luster with the Buckeyes, especially vs. the line, covering just 4 of his last 11 on the board. Tulsa is making tis first trip to the big horseshoe since losing 48-3 in September of 2016 to Urban Meyer’s Ohio State.
Baylor @
Kansas

09-18
The Bears have won 11 straight in what has often been a lopsided series the past decade, though Jayhawks covered as recently as 2018. Unless you were one of those who got KU +27 very early last week for the game at Coastal Carolina and thus earned a push vs. the Chants, new Jayhawks HC Lance Leipold fell just short in his first chance as an underdog in his new job after going 8-3-1 the last four seasons getting points with Buffalo.
USC @
Washington State

09-18
After last week’s poor effort vs. Stanford, Trojan coach Clay Helton was jettisoned by AD Mike Bohn on Monday, to be replaced by assistant coach Donte Williams on an interim basis. (For those who are counting, that’s the third time SC has pulled the plug on one of its head coaches during a season since 2013, with Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian having earlier met similar fates.) Helton was just 6-13 vs. the spread last 18 laying double digits, though one of those Ws was a 38-13 rout of the Cougs at the L.A. Coliseum in last year’s abbreviated schedule. WSU is only 1-5 vs. the line for Nick Rolovich since last season and just 4-14 overall vs. the line the last 18 on the board.
Nevada @
Kansas State

09-18
The Wolf Pack has been howling lately, covering five straight for Jay Norvell after last week’s blowout of Idaho State (and avenging a bitter loss to the 30-point underdog Bengals in Norvell’s first year at Reno in 2017). Nevada has also covered 6 of its last 7 chances as an underdog as it heads to Big 12 country, and note outright wins for Norvell against Power 5 foes the last three “real” seasons (Oregon State in 2018, Purdue in 2019, and Cal two weeks ago in 2021).
Purdue @
Notre Dame

09-18
Former annual in-state rivalry that resumes after the series went on hiatus following 2014. Boilermakers-Fighting Irish used to be among the highest-profile matchups in the country, especially in the late 1960s when Purdue mostly had the advantage, winning 4 of 5 times between 1965-69, with HC Jack Mollenkopf one of the few mentors to get the best of Ara Parseghian at Notre Dame (Mollenkopf won 4 of their 6 meetings). Included were a pair of nationally-televised games, including the 1966 opener at South Bend when Parseghian’s eventual national champs won 26-14 in the debut game for soph QB Terry Hanratty, though Purdue would roll in ‘68 by a 37-22 count in front of the ABC cameras in what was a matchup of the top-two ranked teams in the country (Purdue was ranked No. 1 at the time). Even a pep rally appearance the previous night by actor Pat O’Brien, reprising his title role from “Knute Rockne, All-American,” could not fire up the Irish enough to deal with the sleek Purdue offense that made mincemeat of the Parseghian defense, with star RB Leroy Keyes running for two scores, passing for another, and for good measure playing at a CB spot on defense and blanketing top ND receiver Jim Seymour. Mollenkopf would beat Parseghian again the following 1969 by a 28-14 count a Ross-Ade Stadium as Purdue’s Mike Phipps became the first QB to ever lead his team to three consecutive wins over Notre Dame. Note that current Boilermakers HC Jeff Brohm is 11-3 his last 14 as dog, while after the close call vs. Toledo last week. Meanwhile, Notre Dame is just 1-5 its last six as South Bend chalk.
Minnesota U @
Colorado

09-18
Though the Golden Gophers couldn’t quite handle a near-3 TD impost last week vs. Miami-O, Minny has still dropped only 8 of its last 24 spread decisions for P.J. Fleck.
Michigan State @
Miami Florida

09-18
Intersectional foes meet for the first time since 1989 when Dennis Erickson’s eventual national title winners squeezed a 26-20 win at George Perles’ Michigan State in a late September battle. That Canes team would only lose a late October game at Florida State, and by virtue of a 27-10 win over top-ranked Notre Dame on Thanksgiving weekend had a chance at the national crown in the Sugar Bowl, where Miami beat Bill Curry’s Alabama 33-25. A loss by top-ranked Colorado to the Fighting Irish in the Orange Bowl paved the way for Miami to finish on top of the polls. Note that the Canes have struggled lately as home chalk, covering just 7 of the last 21 for Mark Richt and Manny Diaz.
Boston College @
Temple

09-18
The host Owls found a team they could beat up (Akron) late week, but note they had dropped 7 of their previous 9 on the board, and didn’t cover any of their games at the Linc last season for HC Rod Carey.
Virginia Tech @
West Virginia

09-18
This rivalry goes back a pretty long way, with the first matchup taking place in 1912, less than two weeks after Woodrow Wilson won the presidency from William Howard Taft. VPI won 41-0, in what would eventually become a familiar matchup with the schools meeting every season between 1972-2005. From 1991-2003, the Hokies and Mounties were both members of the Big East. Note that WVU was 4-0-1 vs. the line in Morgantown LY, though VPI has opened with a pair of wins and covers in 2021 for HC Justin Fuente.
Cincinnati U @
Indiana

09-18
These schools are only 130 miles apart, which will make it convenient for Bearcat fans to make the trip from Cincy. Note that the Bearcats have covered 5 of their last 6 away from home, though the Hoosiers enter this week having covered 7 of their last 8 at Bloomington following last week’s 56-14 pasting of Big Sky Idaho.
No Illinois @
Michigan

09-18
Don’t say the Huskies are anything less than entertaining after a pair of wild finishes while splitting with Georgia Tech and Wyoming the first two weeks of the season. NIU even rallied from a 42-16 deficit last Saturday vs. the Cowboys, assuming a lead in the 4th Q before a late Wyo score pulled out the game for Craig Bohl’s bunch. The Huskies are now 7-3 as a road dog for HC Michael Hammock, while Michigan has won and covered twice out of the Big Ten to open the season after dropping 6 of the previous 7 spread decisions vs. non-league foes.
Nebraska @
Oklahoma

09-18
First meeting between these historical rivals since 2010, which was the Huskers’ last year in the Big 12 before moving to the Big Ten in 2011. Oklahoma won that matchup for the conference title by a 23-20 count, though what is really remembered from this rivalry was a series of high-stakes encounters in the 70s and 80s, especially the classic 1971 renewal on Thanksgiving between No. 1 (Nebraska) and No. 2 (OU) at Norman. A see-saw game finally landed on the Huskers’ side in a 35-31 thriller that lived up to its “Game of the Century” label and featured a long TD punt return by Nebraska’s Johnny Rodgers, who would replicate that with another in the Orange Bowl vs. Alabama, setting up his Heisman year of 1972. Interestingly, Nebraska (Orange) and Oklahoma (Sugar) were already penciled into their respective bowls before “The Great Prairie Shootout” as were Alabama and Auburn, who would meet two days alter in the Iron Bowl as a pair of unbeatens. The Orange Bowl caught the break when the Huskers and Crimson Tide, to be matched in Miami, both won to set up another 1 vs. 2 showdown for Nebraska, which it won handily 38-6. Oklahoma and Auburn were set for the Sugar Bowl before Thanksgiving weekend, which became the consolation bowl that New Year’s Day 1972. Note that after the 1971 win, the Huskers didn’t beat the Sooners again until 1978, with Tom Osborne (NU) and Barry Switzer (OU) both taking over their respective coaching positions in 1973.
Connecticut @
Army

09-18
The Huskies continue to plumb new depth of ineptitude, now 3-29 SU their last 32 games after the 4909 rout by Purdue last week, which was the first game for interim HC Lou Spanos, who was the d.c. before Randy Edsall’s resignation/retirement/force-out (take your pick) after the previous week’s loss to Holy Cross. UConn is now 7-20 vs. the line since 2019, and 2-10 its last 12 as a road dog as it invades West Point.
Maryland @
Illinois

09-17
Maryland has made a quick 2-0 break from the gate for Mike Locksley but here is where the Terps have had trouble in recent years, covering just 5 of their last 14 tries as a Big Ten visitor.
Central Florida @
Louisville

09-17
First meeting since 2013, when what would be a Fiesta Bowl-winning Knights side under George O’Leary won a 38-35 nailbiter at what they then called Papa John’s Stadium in the ‘Ville. UCF didn’t cover the opener vs. Boise State for new HC Gus Malzahn, dropping the Knights to 6-15 vs. the spread extending back to early 2019 prior to last Saturday’s 63-14 win and narrow cover vs. 46-point dog Bethune Cookman, which made the short ride to Orlando from Daytona Beach.
Ohio @
UL Lafayette

09-16
by Bruce Marshall, Goldsheet.com Editor Things have not started out well for new Bobcats HC Tim Albin, promoted over the summer due to healthy concerns of former HC Frank Solich. Ohio is 0-2 and suffered the ignominy of losing to FCS Duquesne last Saturday in Athens, which probably made some of the Rooney clan in Pittsburgh feel pretty good (the on-campus stadium is named after Steeler founder Art Rooney). The Iron Dukes were a power in the 1930s under coaches Elmer Layden and Clipper Smith, both via Notre Dame where each had played under Knute Rockne. This will be a rematch of the 2019 game vs. “Oooh-La La” at Athens, when the Ragin’ Cajuns whipped Solich’s Ohio, 45-25, piling up 285 yards rush (backs Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas both cracking the century mark) while current QB Levi Lewis passed for a pair of TDs.
