Hank takes an early look at the NFL in Week 1. Note that these are early forecasts so be sure and purchase Hank’s Best Bets for the latest winning information and payday for Sunday!
This is the biggest line of the week and for good reason. The Saints are stacked to the hilt with playmakers and a Hall of Fame quarterback. The Buccaneers are trotting Ryan Fitzpatrick out there with little running game to speak of. Tampa Bay has a better team than many realize, but it’s not enough here.
Pick: New Orleans 31, Tampa Bay 20
Everybody loves the 49ers. San Francisco is the trendy pick in many corners because of the beautiful Jimmy Garoppolo and a quality head coach in Kyle Shanahan. This will serve as a reminder that the Vikings are a complete team with years ripening on the vine, something San Francisco must do before getting to their level.
Pick: Minnesota 27, San Francisco 19
Nathan Peterman is starting for the Bills. He’s started once, and threw five interceptions in a single half before being yanked. This time, Peterman will play better, but he’s still going to lose in Baltimore against a Ravens team much better than advertised.
Pick: Baltimore 24, Buffalo 13
If you’re looking for a sleeper, feast your eyes on the Giants. New York has a loaded offense with Saquon Barkley, Odell Beckham Jr., Evan Engram and Sterling Shepard. If the defense simply rebounds to average, the Giants will win games. The Jaguars have a loaded defense, but Blake Bortles doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence.
Pick: New York 20, Jacksonville 16
This might be the best game of Week 1. The Patriots have a middling roster once you get past Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, but those guys make up for plenty of sins. Meanwhile, the Texans are talented at every position group save the offensive line. Maybe an AFC Championship Game preview?
Pick: New England 33, Houston 28
The Titans are impossible to figure. Tennessee should be very tough defensively, but can Marcus Mariota and the offense round into form. Getting Miami should be a gift to start the season, because the Dolphins are without an identity. Are they a run-first offense, a pass-happy group, defensive oriented? Tough to say.
Pick: Miami 17, Titans 12
How in God’s name are the Colts favored? It’s great to see Andrew Luck back healthy, but the rest of that roster leaves plenty to be desired. Meanwhile, the Bengals have a terrific defense that should carry the day come Sunday.
Pick: Cincinnati 30, Indianapolis 17
It’s very, very tempting to pick the Browns here. Pittsburgh is emotionally reeling from the Le’Veon Bell fiasco, and the defense never recovered from losing Ryan Shazier. The Steelers, on paper, should win, but this isn’t going to be a cakewalk as it has been in years past.
Pick: Pittsburgh 21, Cleveland 20
Does anybody punt in this game? The Chiefs may have the best offensive personnel in the game with Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins and Kareem Hunt. If Patrick Mahomes lives up to expectations, look out. As for the Chargers, Philip Rivers remains elite, the pass rush is nasty and Keenan Allen is a beast. This could go either way, but give me the team that has beaten the other eight straight times.
Pick: Kansas City 31, Los Angeles 30
Both the Redskins and the Cardinals have new quarterbacks, and not much hype coming into 2018. The Cardinals are being universally picked as an afterthought, but they have David Johnson returning and a future in Josh Rosen. As for Washington, Alex Smith will be a product of what’s around him.
Pick: Arizona 24, Washington 20
This was a tough game to pick. The Seahawks are much better with their coach-quarterback duo, which is usually the biggest indicator of a solid team. Still, the Broncos have a better roster and while Denver has issues, Seattle has them everywhere you look. Sunday’s Gameday information that just came in suggests an OVER the total Pick!
Pick: Denver 27, Seattle 26 OVER 42
Carolina gets overlooked every year, but the Panthers can really play. Cam Newton should be invigorated by the presence of D.J. Moore and new offensive coordinator Norv Turner. The Cowboys’ only hope in this one is to get Ezekiel Elliott going, because the receivers aren’t scaring anybody.
Pick: Carolina 22, Dallas 17
