Archived: Armed Forces Bowl: Missouri vs Army

December 20, 2021

The Missouri Tigers play the Army Black Knights Wednesday, December 22, in The Armed Forces Bowl at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas. Missouri went 6-6 on the year and ended on a sour note with a loss to Arkansas. The Black Knights were 8-4 this year and are coming into the game, having lost to Navy, their bitter rival. The game will kick at 8:00 PM EST.

The Missouri Tigers have struggled this season and just made bowl eligibility – they are out to prove they belong in a bowl game against the scrappy disciplined Army Black Knights.

Missouri went 3-3 over their first six games with wins over Central Michigan, Southeast Missouri State, and North Texas. They did the same in their last six games with losses to Texas A&M, Georgia, and Arkansas 34-17 and wins over Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and surprisingly, The Florida Gators. The Gators didn’t show up for that game, and the coach was subsequently fired. The Missouri offense is not particularly impressive in any statistical category save one; they average 5.1 yards per running attempt, ranking 24th in that category. The offense averages a solid 30 points a game, gains a little more than 400 yards, and is pretty balanced between the run and pass. Two players lead the offense, QB Connor Bazelak, who has 2,540 passing yards (230.9 yards per game) with a 65.2% completion percentage and 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, and running back Tyler Badie has rushed for 1,612 yards on the season while averaging 134.3 yards per game and scoring 14 touchdowns. He can catch the ball as well with 54 receptions this season, and he averages 27.5 receiving yards per game.

The Tigers convert a large percentage of their first downs and rank 35th in college football.

The Missouri defense is not equal to the quality of the offense, ranking in the 100’s in the country in almost every relevant stat. They surrender 35 points a game on more than 450 yards per game and do much better against the passing game than the run, where they surrender 228 yards per game and rank 127th in the nation in run defense.

Army suffered a Tough Loss Against Navy Last Time Out Can they Rebound and Beat Mizzou in the Armed Forces Bowl?

The Black Knights of Army had an excellent season and entered the annual Army-Navy Game as heavy favorites but were soundly beaten by the Midshipmen. The task before Army is to put that game behind them and focus on the upcoming matchup with the Tigers of Missouri.Army is a run-first team. The triple-option offense is the force multiplier that competes with the bigger, stronger, and more athletically gifted recruits at larger programs. But this Army team does not throw the ball only as a last resort. The Black Knight signal-caller, Christian Anderson, has thrown for 653 passing yards (65.3 yards per game) while going 28-for-59 (47.5% completion percentage) and throwing five touchdowns and zero interceptions. It sounds crazy to say that he is an incredible thrower of the ball with those stats, but he is akin to Tom Brady for Army standards. Something else to note about the Army passing attack is that it ranks number one in the nation in yards per pass attempt at eleven yards per pass. But the stick that stirs the drink for the Black Knights is pounding the rock. Army has the second leading ground game and averages 286 yards per game. Generally, teams that run the ball are not prolific in the scoring department, but Army is an exception scoring 33 points per game and ranks twenty-fifth in that category. Army has a stout defense ranking 35th overall in scoring defense and in the top twenty yards per game and rushing defense. The Knights are vulnerable in the passing game on defense, giving up 8.2 yards per pass attempt (106) and overall giving up 208 yards per contest (38th). Army ranks in the top ten in converting third downs at almost fifty percent per attempt.
