There is only one game on the NBA Playoffs slate on Wednesday. But, boy, does it carry higher stakes than most would have expected early Monday night.
That is because the Philadelphia 76ers stole Game 1 — in Boston, and without Joel Embiid — against the heavily-favored Celtics to grab a 1-0 series lead. Now, the reigning Eastern Conference champions’ backs are against the wall against an underdog with plenty of bite.
8 p.m. ET on TNT
Series: 76ers lead 1-0
Series odds: Celtics -185, 76ers +150
Boston entered Game 1 as double-digit favorites, but Philadelphia hung around by weathering multiple scalding offensive stretches and out-executing the home team in crunch time.
Oh, and riding the red-hot hand of James Harden, of course.
In one of the finest postseason moments of Harden’s decorated career, The Beard dropped 45 points on 17-for-30 shooting, drilling his seventh and final 3-pointer of the evening in dagger fashion.
With Embiid sidelined, questions looming about Harden’s health (as he was nagged by an Achilles injury in recent weeks) and the Celtics having dominated the regular season head-to-head, this was as improbable a victory as we have seen in the playoffs so far.
Can the 76ers replicate that magic in Game 2? Embiid’s status is yet unknown, but their role players showed tremendous mettle in out-dueling a deep and balanced Boston squad in its home floor, which should only boost their confidence further moving forward. In addition to Harden’s 45 points, Tyrese Maxey (26) and Tobias Harris (18) combined for 44, Paul Reed posted a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double in Embiid’s stead and De’Anthony Melton drained five 3s off the bench.
Boston remains favorites to win the next game (-450), this series (-185), the Eastern Conference (-135) and the NBA Finals (+200), according to BetMGM. But as Monday showed, anything can happen, especially in this topsy-turvy NBA Playoffs.
