Archived: Tulsa vs Temple NCAAF Betting Football Odds, Pick & Preview

September 19, 2018

It’s a crossover matchup between a pair of AAC foes in week 4 action on the college gridiron in the City of Brotherly Love. The Tulsa Golden Hurricane is on the road as they make the trip to the northeast to face the Temple Owls Thursday night. Tulsa was defeated 29-20 at home by Arkansas State in non-conference action Saturday. Temple picked up their first win of the season as they knocked off Maryland 35-14 on the road Saturday. The teams have split four previous meetings with the Owls taking a 43-22 win in the last matchup, which came in Tulsa on November 25, 2017.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane Seeking Road Victory in Conference Opener

Tulsa has dropped two straight after opening the season with a win as they fell to Texas and then Arkansas State. The Golden Hurricane jumped to a 7-0 lead but gave up the next 27 points. They drew within seven early in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get any closer. Tulsa was outgained 409-339 in the contest, gave up 24 first downs to their 19 and lost the time of possession battle 33:30 to 26:30 in the game. The Golden Hurricane was also hurt in the turnover battle as they turned it over three times while forcing just one takeaway. One of those giveaways was a pick six, which helped seal Tulsa’s fate.

The Golden Hurricane comes into the game tied for 108th in passing offense with 177.3 yards per contest and 40th in the nation in rushing offense as they put up 210 yards per game. Tulsa is 94th in the FBS in scoring offense with 26.3 points per game this season and stands tied for 86th in scoring defense by giving up 28 points per contest. Luke Skipper is 46 of 75 passing for 521 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions while adding 109 yards plus a score on the ground. Keenen Johnson is one of two passing for 11 yards. Shamari Brooks is the leader in the ground game for the Golden Hurricane with 70 carries for 310 yards plus four scores. Corey Taylor II contributes 36 carries for 163 yards and a score as the second back in the system. In the passing game, Johnson (11 receptions, 159 yards, TD) and Jarion Anderson (11 receptions, 90 yards) are tied for the team lead in catches. Keylon Stokes (10 grabs, 115 yards) is a solid receiving option as well. Nathan Walker has hit all 10 extra points and three of five field goal attempts this season with a long of 40.

Temple Owls Looking to Even Record

Temple started the season 0-2 with losses to Villanova and Buffalo before going on the road to surprise Maryland. The Owls try to even their record on the year as they open up conference play at home. Temple led 7-0 after the opening quarter, 21-7 at the half and 28-7 after three quarters en route to the win. The Owls got a big game from their defense as they shut the Terrapins down offensively. Temple had a 429-195 edge in total offense, had a 21-11 advantage in first downs and controlled the clock by a 36:33 to 23:27 margin. Temple forced two turnovers, including a pick six, but gave up a touchdown on a pick six along with a blocked punt return.

The Owls are 69th in the FBS in passing offense as they average 236.3 yards per contest through the air and just 118th in rushing offense with 108.7 yards per game on the ground. Temple is 89th in the nation in scoring offense with 27 points per game and stand tied for 58th in scoring defense by allowing 23 points per game. Frank Nutile is 33 of 63 passing for 401 yards with four touchdowns against four interceptions. Anthony Russo hit 17 of 29 passes for 252 yards with a touchdown and a pick while Todd Centeio is two of three for 56 yards plus a touchdown. In the run game, Ryquell Armstead has done the heavy lifting with 54 carries for 256 yards. Rob Ritrovato is next in line with 15 carries for 39 yards plus a score. Branden Mack leads the team with 13 receptions for 155 yards plus two scores while Ventell Bryant contributes 12 catches for 131 yards as a secondary option. Will Mobley has booted all eight extra point attempts while not trying a field goal this season. Aaron Boumerhi is two of two on extra points while going one of three on field goals with a long of 46.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Tulsa has played tough this season as they forced Texas to grind out a win in week 2 before losing to Arkansas State at home. The Golden Hurricane now has to face a Temple team that regrouped with a stifling win over a Maryland team that was piling up points and yards in the first two weeks. The Owls held Maryland to 63 passing yards in the contest last week. Tulsa is more run oriented but Temple’s defense is allowing just 145 yards per game on the ground.
