American League Rookie of the Year Odds

April 7, 2020

Following up the 2019 AL Rookie of the Year will be a tough act. Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez became the 11th rookie to win the award unanimously after hitting .313 and plating 78 RBIs in the 2019 season. While we’re still not sure when the 2020 season will get underway, here are the odds for the rookies who will be looking to follow up his impressive performance:

Luis Robert +300

Robert starts the season as the season as the favorite and for good reason. He hit .328, 32 homeruns, and 92 RBIs last year across Triple-A, Double-A, and Single-A before signing a massive five-year deal with the White Sox.

Jesus Luzardo +450

Luzardo only appeared in six games and pitched only 12 innings for the A’s last season, but he showed great potential after registering a 1.50 ERA and getting two saves, which is one of the reasons he has one of the lowest odds to win AL ROY.

Michael Kopech +600

Kopech might have missed the entire 2019 season but still comes in as one of the favorites to win the award. The fireballer went 7-7 with a 3.70 ERA in AAA back in 2018, which also included a successful stint in the big league.

Brendan McKay +800

One of McKay’s top quality is that he has potential to be very good as a pitcher and hitter. In 2019, McKay went 3-0 with a 1.30 ERA in eight appearances in Triple-A, but didn’t find much success hitting. Regardless, his potential is still through the roof.

Casey Mize +1000

Mize had a terrific 2019 season in Single-A and Double-A, posting an 8-3 record and 2.55 ERA in 21 starts. The 2018 Detroit Tigers first overall pick has a good as chance as anyone to win AL ROY.

Jo Adell +1000

Adell, a 20-year old slugger Los Angeles Angels, hit .289 last year across three minor league ballclubs, smashing 10 homeruns and knocking in 36 RBIs along the way. If Adell can product similar numbers, his name will be a top contender for the award.

Evan White +1800

White had a monster season last year for Seattle’s Double-A team, hitting .293, 18 homeruns, and bringing in 55 RBIs. The 23-year old secured a six-year contract with the Mariners before the season, so he will be motivated to live up to that contract.

A.J. Puk +2000

Puk is a solid relief man for the A’s an showed it for most of his 2019 campaign across all four leagues, including posting 3.18 ERA in 11.1 innings pitched in the big leagues

Forrest Whitley +2000

Whitley bounced around several leagues last year but showed flashes of his talent in Single-A (1-0, 2.16 ERA in two starts) and in Fall League (3-2, 2.88 ERA in six starts).

Nate Pearson +2000

Pearson had a stellar 2019 season, posting a 5-4 record in 2.30 ERA across 25 starts in Triple-A, Double-A, and Single-A. In 16 starts for the Toronto Blue Jays Double-A team, he put up a stellar 2.59 ERA and had 69 strikeouts in only 62.2 innings pitched.
