Archived: Thursday Night NFL Game Betting Odds and Preview: Jets at Browns

September 20, 2018

The Thursday Night Game this week features two young teams that are not expected to do much this season, but both appear to be on the way up, so this game should be exciting. Both feature drafted QB’s that were taken within the top 3 picks in the draft, however, only one of them will be on the field tonight.

Betting odds: New York Jets at Cleveland Browns
Spread: Browns -3
Over/Under: 39.5
Time: 8:20 p.m. ET
TV channel: NFL Network

Betting market: Not only are the Browns favored for the first time in the Hue Jackson era, but bettors are willingly laying the points. Sixty-one percent of spread tickets and 78% of dollars wagered have come in on Cleveland as of this writing  The line remains where it opened at -3, but the -115 vig at BookMaker suggests that books are, in fact, heavier on the Browns. The closest the Jackson-coached Browns have come to being favorites before was against the Colts in Week 3 of 2017, opening -1 at Pinnacle before closing as 1-point underdogs.

Cleveland’s offense is playing out exactly as the scouting report on Tyrod Taylor would suggest: not a great passer but doesn’t turn it over and can run the ball. So far, Taylor and the Browns have only mustered 384 passing yards through two games (ranked 26th) while gashing 270 yards on the ground (ranked fifth) with Taylor leading the team with 103 rushing yards and throwing two interceptions, so the story checks out.  As a Jets fan told me during Week 2’s loss, “They never win when they’re supposed to.” Well, that statement isn’t entirely true as New York is 12-8 SU and 10-9-1 ATS over its last 20 games as a favorite but in recent history, he may be onto something. The Jets are 1-3 SU and ATS in their last four games as chalk dating back to Week 13 in 2016 and coincidentally, that lone victory was vs the Browns last season.

But as he put it, they were “supposed” to win that game as the Jets have won five straight games vs Cleveland (average win margin of 8.8 points) with four of those games taking place over the last four seasons.

  • The Jets are 5-0 SU and ATS in their last five games vs the Browns.
  • The Jets are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games as underdogs of 3 points or more.
  • The UNDER has hit in 11 of the Browns’ last 14 games at home.
