Starting pitchers are the linchpin of any successful MLB team. Many pitchers can take the ball every five days, but only a few regularly dominate. In 2022 MLB Cy Young odds, the top hurlers stand out.
Updated Cy Young odds has Yankees starter Gerrit Cole leading the way in the American League while three NL aces battle it out atop the National League odds.
Cole (+400), who fell just short of a Cy to Robbie Ray in 2021, is followed in AL Cy Young odds by Cleveland’s Shane Bieber (+600), Ray (+900) and Chicago’s Lucas Giolito (+1000). Following Jacob deGrom’s injury, the NL Cy Young odds see Corbin Burnes, Walker Buehler and Max Scherzer all tied at +700 up top.

Sticky stuff or not, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is one of the best pitchers in baseball. While many workhorse arms have injury concerns, Cole is atop this Cy Young odds list because he has the high upside of the best in baseball and the durability that many lack.
The righty has started a full slate of games in each of his last five seasons, posting an ERA of 3.25 or lower in the last four campaigns. Despite being one of the best pitchers in baseball for the last few seasons, Cole doesn’t have a Cy. It feels like 2022 is his year.
If you don’t want to bet the favorite, or you just don’t like the Yankees, there’s plenty of value in Cleveland’s Shane Bieber. After shoulder injuries ruined his 2021, it seems many have forgotten just how dominant the Guardians hurler has been during his MLB career. In a shortened 2020, Bieber was 8-1 with a crazy 1.63 ERA.
If he can log the innings of an ace, he’ll have the high strikeout totals and minuscule ERA he’ll need to snatch his second Cy.
Going down the board, there’s some value in Chicago’s Lance Lynn and Toronto’s Jose Berrios.
Lynn was near the top of AL Cy Young betting odds for most of the season last year, but a few bad starts in September ruined his chances. He still finished third in the voting and has finished in the top six in Cy voting for the last three seasons. The Chicago righty will start the season on the IL, but he has the ability to log enough innings and strikeouts to work his way back into the Cy conversation.
It isn’t natural to think that a pitcher leaving the AL Central for the AL East would improve, but that’s exactly what Berrios did last season. After joining the Blue Jays in July, the righty struck out 10 batters per nine and posted a 3.28 FIP in his final 12 starts. If he pitches like that, he’ll be near the top of these odds soon enough.
