And then there were three. That is how many teams in the National Football League that remain undefeated, and the Kansas City Chiefs are one of them. If they want to stay that way, they are going to have to do it by beating the Broncos on Monday Night in the Mile High City. Denver comes into the contest with a 2-1 mark but with a win, could take sole control of first place in the AFC West on this young season. The rivalry is a storied with Kansas City leading the all-time series 61-55 and having also won five consecutive games, including a 27-24 road victory on New Year’s Eve.
While the Chiefs are getting a lot of attention this season, everybody knows that the real story is Patrick Mahomes. The second year player out of Texas Tech has been lighting it up and has already thrown for three touchdowns in three wins, plus 896 yards and no interceptions. His favorite target Tyreek Hill has been reaping the benefits with 310 yards and three scores. Oh, and they have a running game to go along with the passing game as well. Kareem Hunt has ran for 168 yards and two TDs.
Perhaps what is even more impressive is that two of KC’s three wins have come on the road. The team has been setting off fireworks since the first game when they put up 38 points in a 10-point victory over the Chargers in Los Angeles. They followed that up with a 42 point performance and five-point win in Pittsburgh that saw Mahomes throw for six touchdowns. Last week they dropped back down to another 38 point output in their 38-27 victory over San Francisco at Arrowhead.
It was announced on Tuesday that safety Eric Berry and linebacker Ben Niemann are both listed as questionable for Monday night’s contest. So far, the Chiefs are averaging 39.3 points per game, a full 19 points more than the Broncos are averaging. They are also giving up seven more points a game though. Regardless, the matchups favor Kansas City in this one and they have already shown their ability to win on the road.
Nobody likes losing to a rival five consecutive times, and when it comes to this heated rivalry, Denver surely outright hates it. They will at least get the Chiefs at home with a raucous crowd at night this time around, but will it be enough? They will need their offense to click better than it has to this point this season because even though they have won two of three games, they still are not averaging 21 points a game.
They did score 27 points in their season-opening victory over Seattle, but needed every bit of them as they also gave up 24. In week two against the Raiders, they ere shut out at halftime but rallied in the second half for a one-point victory. Last week was their first road test, and they failed it. The squad managed just 14 points in the 27-14 setback to Baltimore. Case Keenum threw for 192 yards and a pick in defeat, while Royce Freeman managed just 53 yards on the ground, but did at least find the end zone. Demaryius Thomas led the team in receiving with five catches for 63 yards.
Despite being outscored by nearly three touchdowns a game by the Chiefs, Denver is only averaging 10 less yards per contest, and rushing for 41 yards more per game. If they can get the ground attack rolling and keep the ball out of Mahomes hands then they have a solid shot here. If they have a lot of three-and-outs then it likely to be a rough night in the Rocky Mountains.
