Archived: Top 2019 Quarterbacks College Football

June 7, 2019

The Top 3 betting choices on futures bets in college football are Alabama (+240), Clemson (+250) and Georgia (+750). Chances are all three, or at the very least two will reach the college football playoffs. And besides having loaded teams, they have quarterbacks that should be high draft picks when they are eligible in Tua Tagovailoa, Trevor Lawrence and Jake Fromm respectively.

After that, the college football odds are more open for various reasons. Most teams do not have the same kind of personnel, their schedules could be more challenging or other factors. But at least they should have quality quarterback play that could give them a chance.

Here is a look at the teams, their quarterbacks and latest odds of the top contenders to fill out the selection process.

Ohio State – Justin Fields (+875)

The former Georgia quarterback has some big shoes to fill in Scarlet and Red as the Ohio State quarterback with the departure of Dwayne Haskins. Fields has the talent, but he is still going to learn how to play in a pressure cooker and how to connect better on crossing routes or throws into the flat. He will be pushed by redshirt freshman Matthew Baldwin.

Oklahoma – Jalen Hurts (+1400)

We know Jalen Hurts is a player. Now he will have his chance to shine at Oklahoma and be rid all those super fast and quick defenses in the SEC that can make any quarterback look a little worse. Hurts is not the best passer in college football, but in an offense more suited to his skills which coach Lincoln Riley incorporates. The Sooners will again be the Big 12 favorites for college football picks.

Michigan – Shea Patterson (+1800)

Patterson had a good, but not great, first year in Michigan and will have to evolve to be considered among the best in the sport. Being more comfortable in the offense will help, but the senior has to be more of a playmaker this season for coach Jim Harbaugh and look less like game-manager like last year.

Texas – Sam Ehlinger (+2500)

Ehlinger really came into his own last year and showed a very talented arm. In addition, as opposed to several recent quarterbacks at Texas, he wanted to be in the big moment and embraced it for his team. If the junior has his Longhorn teammates make the same growth upgrade he did last year, there might be a new sheriff in the Big 12, coming from Austin.

LSU – Joe Burrow (+2650)

Burrow came to LSU and spent the first half of the season as a starter fitting in and doing what was asked. He continued to improve in a rather conservative offense but had a coming out party in the Fiesta Bowl win over Central Florida. The Tigers are putting in an RPO-style offense this season and Burrow cannot wait, being a skilled, if not flashy runner and an on-target passer. Getting past Alabama is a monumental task, but Burrow gives every indication he’s at least up to the challenge.

Florida – Feleipe Franks (+2750)

No quarterback improved as much in the SEC from start to finish last season as Franks. His game grew and so did his confidence and Franks and his teammates demolished Michigan in the Peach Bowl. If the rebuilt offensive line comes together swiftly, Florida’s battle with Georgia on Nov. 2nd might be for a berth in the SEC title game.

Though we might find more long shots than this once the college football season starts, for now before we kickoff any football, this is what the college football odds are at 5Dimes for those who are thought to have a legitimate shot to possibly when their win division and their conference championship, or some other means to play on Dec. 28th.

All of these teams have a few more flaws, at least going into the season, but as we have witnessed many times, what looks right on paper is not how things always work out and it’s not unusual to find a squad that was not receiving a great deal of attention to come off the pace and surprise us.

Oregon – Justin Herbert (+3300)

Some were surprised Herbert returned but with an improved Oregon squad with a real chance to win the Pac-12, it was a good choice. Herbert likely also realized he could use a little more seasoning and improve his draft status and if he could lead the Ducks to the CFP, that would be special.

Notre Dame – Ian Book (+4000)

Though not your prototypical dual-threat quarterback, Book has improved in throwing, running and decision-making each season. Notre Dame is about where they were last year as far as odds to reach the playoffs again and if Book and his teammates can win at Georgia and at Michigan, they are positioned for a repeat of last year.

Auburn – Bo Nix (+5000)

Nix is a five-star true freshman ranked No. 1 among dual-threat quarterbacks in the Class of 2019. Will he show enough to win the Auburn job as a true freshman or is it just a matter of time before he takes over? By all accounts, if the Tigers are to pass hated Alabama and LSU in the SEC West, Nix is there best shot.

Penn State – Sean Clifford (+5500)

Clifford is the expected starter for the Nittany Lions and he will have big shoes to fill. If the junior does not work out, freshman Ta’Quan Roberson or Michael Johnson would get a shot, but if Penn State made that switch, they are probably already are out of playoff contention.

Texas A&M – Kellen Mund (+5500)

Mund thrived in Jimbo Fisher’s quarterback-based offense and should have an even better season as a junior. Yet, one has to wonder if Texas A&M is ready to pass up Alabama or Georgia, to say nothing of LSU and Florida in the SEC.

Utah – Tyler Huntley (+6000)

Though Huntley has always been a solid quarterback for much of his career, winning the big game has not always been his strength. Now a senior and being injury-prone, this is his one last shot to take Utah to the top of the Pac-12 mountain and maybe, just maybe shock the world and get an invite to the big party.

Washington – Jacob Eason (+6600)

Eason was thought to be the best pro-style QB coming out of high school in 2016. He got hurt in the first game of his sophomore, lost his job to Jake Fromm and transferred to Washington where he can play in an offense tailored to his skills. Can he return the Huskies to a second Final 4 appearance in three years?

Nebraska – Adrian Martinez (+8000)

Martinez as a freshman went through all the ups and downs like his Nebraska teammates last season. But after learning what it takes to win and being in the second year of coach Scott Frost’s offense, surrounded by better teammates, Martinez should flourish in a top-flight offense. The Cornhuskers could win the Big Ten West and who knows from there.
